Description

The overall aim of Trauma Informed Practice is to ensure that services are delivered in ways that prevent further harm or retraumatisation for those who have already experienced psychological trauma or adversity at any stage in their lives.

Trauma Informed Practice principles are generally applicable, for instance in: general practice, mental health, residential care, police, criminal justice social work, addiction services and education. Different authors quote slightly differing lists and numbers of ‘key TIP principles’ but most include the following:

  • Safety
  • Trust
  • Choice
  • Collaboration
  • Empowerment
  • And more

To help you achieive the aim of trauma informed practice the course covers mainly the following:

  • The definition of a trauma and what effects are commonly experienced post-trauma.
  • The idea that the effects of trauma can persist for a very long time or for ever.
  • What makes for a trauma informed organisation? The APT’s definitive list of factors comparable with those above.
  • Examining additional factors relevant to your own specific situation.
  • How Trauma Informed Practice increases our job satisfaction, motivation and resilience.
  • The questions we need to answer if we want our organisation to be Trauma Informed as well as your own practice.
  • How you can apply the answers to those questions, to the benefit of your organisation.

I found this course on trauma-informed practice to be extremely informative and practical. The concepts of distraction, mindfulness, self-soothing, correcting distortions, reframing events, and self-compassion were clearly explained and illustrated with relevant examples. I particularly appreciated how the course demonstrated the application of these skills in real-life settings, including medical and social work contexts. The exercises helped me reflect on my own work with clients and provided a useful framework for supporting individuals experiencing stress or trauma. I also found the guidance on self-compassion and helping clients reframe difficult experiences to be very valuable. Overall, the course has enhanced my understanding and confidence in applying trauma-informed approaches in my professional practice.
