Description

‘Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness’ is a 6-hour, self-paced course for professionals in the UK and Ireland who wish to understand autism and neurodiversity with confidence and compassion.

Founded in 1981, the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT) has trained over 150,000 professionals in evidence-based approaches, commissioned by numerous health authorities and healthcare providers.

APT’s Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness training uniquely combines built-in APT Accreditation with automatic access to our renowned post-course resources to help you support your clients. It is available for both teams and individuals.

Executive Summary:

APT’s Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness training provides a clear, practical introduction to autism and the wider field of neurodiversity (which includes ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s, and more). It is designed for professionals who may not specialise in this area but who recognise the importance of understanding neurodivergent people and working in ways that genuinely support them.

Participants will learn how different ways of thinking, perceiving, and processing information can shape a person’s experience, and how small changes in communication and environment can make a major difference. By the end, you’ll feel more confident, informed, and skilled in recognising and responding to neurodivergent individuals in your everyday work.

About the Course:

The course explores questions such as:

  • What do we mean by neurodiversity and neurodivergence?
  • What are the core characteristics of autism, (and to a lesser degree, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia), and other neurodivergent conditions)?
  • Why is awareness of these differences so important across education, healthcare, and community services?
  • How does being neurodivergent affect daily life, relationships, and mental wellbeing?
  • What helps? Practical ways to communicate, structure environments, and reduce distress.
  • What support and resources are available for neurodivergent people and their families?

Who should attend:

This course is for anyone who encounters neurodivergent individuals in their work — for example in healthcare, education, social care, housing, or community roles — and who wants a sound, accessible grounding in the subject. It is especially suited to those with little or no prior knowledge who wish to work more confidently and inclusively.

The course was great. I am from Canada, I was not used to some of the local language, but overall, the concepts and the message was heard. Thank you.

This had a lot of great information that will be very helpful not only for me but for anyone that does this course. I would love to see more courses on autism as I feel lots of people try to "ignore" it.

I really enjoyed the lectures. I like how they left room for more different interpretations or different situations. The focus on looking at the people as people instead of a problem. when we are trying to help people who’s behavior we might find behavior problematic, but we are trying to help them so it should be us that makes space for what their needs are. The subject may even feel the behavior is completely normal. As people who are trying assist or care for them we have to make space for their needs. It was nice.
