**This refresher course is only available to those that have completed ‘CBT for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: There Must Be A Better Way' and are wanting to refresh their knowledge and renew their APT Accreditation.** Deliberate non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the intentional cause of harm to one's own body, very often to cope with intense emotional distress. Very often it achieves that aim, which is why it persists. It is more prevalent amongst young people, though by no means confined to them. Non-suicidal self-injury is not attempted suicide. People who self-harm do not intend to kill themselves, at that point in time. In attempted suicide, by contrast, the person intends to kill themselves. However, although it is important to distinguish between non-suicidal self-injury and attempted suicide, people who self-harm are in fact 10 times more likely to eventually end their own lives than people who don't. Sometimes, non-suicidal self-injury is triggered by events such as: bereavement, loss of employment, imprisonment, relationship problems, and other crises, yet at other times, none of those are present, and the non-suicidal self-injury seems to be purely an effective means of coping with tension and stress. NSSI is a presentation which is worrying and dis-empowering for many professionals, so this course sets out to give a clear and effective approach to working with non-suicidal self-injury by providing patients with something that works better for them than harming themselves. **This refresher course is only available to those that have previously completed the 'CBT Plus, for Suicide Prevention' course with the APT, and are wanting to refresh their knowledge and renew their APT Accreditation.** There is more to working with suicidality than risk assessment and management, and having mastered those, we need then to be able to help people to build lives that are much more rewarding. It is unrealistic to think we can create lives that are completely free of suffering, but perfectly realistic to help create lives that are worth suffering for. And this 3-day course strives to achieve just that. Some professionals become anxious about seeing patients who are suicidal, so what this course aims to do is to help us become relaxed and optimistic about seeing suicidal people, because we will know how to give them hope, and how to deliver as well as possible on that hope. In this distance learning module from the APT, we talk about what consultation meetings are, why they're valuable, and how to structure them for maximum benefit. If you work with extremely distressing and demanding conditions - as many mental health professionals do - or work with very specific therapeutic approaches which need close adherence to their principles, then it is virtually certain that your work will be tremendously facilitated by well organised consultation meetings. This module shows you how to achieve just that. This module is part of the exciting Microlearning series of one hour modules. Each consists of an audio lasting 15-30 minutes, plus an exercise and resources for you to you use and practice with afterwards. The series is so named because it features all the 'higher order' factors that make therapy successful. If you examine the leading therapies they overlap to a fascinating degree, so by studying all the overlapping elements and then 'picking off' the elements that are unique to each particular therapy you achieve an extraordinary power and breadth in your ability to help others. And this is what the Microlearning series enables you to do.  If you are an experienced therapist looking at the Microlearning Modules you will quickly be able to see the ones you are proficient at and the ones you maybe need to brush up on, and that's exactly what you can do here.  Every module in the Microlearning Module series is designed to be accessible, relevant and engaging, so encouraging both novice and expert therapists alike to develop exactly those elements they want to. Finally, don't be misled by the price; you may feel that the low price suggests these are not serious modules whereas in fact they very much are. The APT's purpose is to make the best, most relevant and engaging training accessible to as many mental health professionals as possible. Read more
